We love July in Wisconsin, but nobody loves opening up their utility bill after a week of running the air conditioner non-stop. With the mid-summer heat officially settling over the Fox River Valley, your HVAC system is likely working overtime.

Fortunately, you don't have to suffer through the heat to save a few bucks. Here are four quick, highly effective ways to keep your home comfortable and your energy bills down this month.

Manage the Blinds (The Greenhouse Effect)

The simplest way to cool your home is to stop it from getting hot in the first place. Windows facing east and west can let in a massive amount of radiant heat during the day. Close your curtains or blinds in the morning before you leave for work, especially on sunny days. You'll be amazed at how much cooler your living room stays.

Give Your Appliances a Daytime Rest

Large appliances like clothes dryers, dishwashers, and ovens generate a surprising amount of internal heat. If you run them during the hottest parts of the afternoon, your AC has to combat both the outdoor elements and your indoor appliances. Try running your dishwasher or laundry late at night or early in the morning instead.

Fire Up the Grill, Keep the Oven Off

July is the perfect excuse to embrace the patio. Using your indoor stove or oven acts like a giant space heater in your kitchen. Lean into grill season! Cooking outside keeps the heat exactly where it belongs—out of your house.

Check Your WPS Energy Account

Take advantage of online tools from Wisconsin Public Service (WPS). Logging into your account allows you to track your daily energy usage patterns so you can see exactly when your spikes are happening and adjust your thermostat habits accordingly.
